Imagine lying in bed during a storm and hearing a loud crash! When you finally gain the courage to find out what has happened you see that a tree has fallen through your home. Although this occurrence does not happen too often, you should still know how to handle the situation; with another Hurricane Season around the corner.
Document the Situation
The first thing you should do is take pictures of everything. It is important that you have proof of what has happened for your claims adjuster.
Call Your Claims Adjuster
After getting proof of the damage you should call your claims adjuster, who will evaluate the damage. They will be the people to let you know how your homeowners insurance will handle everything.
Whether or not the tree was on your property prior to the incident makes no difference. In most cases, your homeowners insurance will cover the cost of removing the tree and fixing the damage. The only issue that could arise is if the tree was rotting and ready to fall over anyway. If this is the case and it was your responsibility to remove it, then your insurance may not be able to cover the damage.
It’s important to always keep your yard maintained and look out for signs of danger in the surrounding area!
